Did you know that our skin is our largest organ.  The skin is kept in close contact with all our bodily functions through a network of nerve fibres and muscles. Imbalances in organs or organ functions influence directly on the healthy state of the skin.   The skin takes in water, salts and fat-soluble substances and well as synthetic and petro-chemically derived products.  The areas on the body where absorption is greater are the genitals, head (forehead and scalp), soles and palms, the armpits and mucous membranes (ie. mouth).   This is useful information, especially when we know that aluminium in deoderant, which is applied on your armpits, contributes to Althzheimers.

The skin is covered by a thin film of lipid substances, which are formed by the sebaceous glands (sebum) and are present in an emulsified form with water sweat. The lipids keep the skins surface slick and supple, isolate against temperature changes, regulate water content of the lower lying skin and layers and forms a barrier to prevent pathogenic microorganisms from entering.  This is also know as the hydrolipid layer. Skin ages due to insufficient blood and nutrient supply to the hydrolipid layer and surrounding tissues.

Functions of the skin

The integumentary system has multiple roles in homeostasis. All body systems work in an interconnected manner to maintain the internal conditions essential to the function of the body. The skin has an important job of protecting the body and acts somewhat as the body’s first line of defense against infection, temperature change or other challenges to homeostasis. Functions include:

  • Protects the body’s internal living tissues and organs
  • Protects against invasion by infectious organisms
  • Protects the body from dehydration
  • Protects the body against abrupt changes in temperature
  • Helps excrete waste materials through perspiration
  • Acts as a receptor for touch, pressure, pain, heat, and cold
  • Protects the body against sunburn
  • Generates vitamin D through exposure to ultraviolet light
  • Stores water, fat, and vitamin D

Diseases and injuries

Possible diseases and injuries to the human integumentary system include:

  • Rash
  • Blister
  • Athlete’s foot
  • Infection
  • Sunburn
  • Skin Cancer

Saroma Aromatics compliment the health of your skin and stimulate its natural functions. They contain ingredients that the skin utilises and passes through the blood system cleanly without building up in the cells.
